Pillars and Themes

Turn messaging pillars into a monthly theme plan without a content calendar obsession.

Pillars and Themes

Pillars are strategic buckets. Themes are monthly or weekly angles inside a pillar — so you go deep without repeating the same sentence.

Monthly theme method

  • Pick one pillar as focus for the month
  • Choose one buyer question inside that pillar
  • Generate 4–6 post angles on that question
  • Other posts rotate remaining pillars lightly
Example: Pillar = "checkout optimization." Theme = "why shipping surprises kill conversion." Angles: calculator post, screenshot audit, myth bust, client quote, checklist carousel.

Theme sources

Source
Example theme
Sales calls"Prospects always ask about pricing page layout"
Support tickets"Three confusions new users have"
Your mistakes"What I broke last launch"
Seasonality"Q4 planning for email capture"

Weekly mapping (2 posts)

Week
Post 1
Post 2
1Theme deep diveProof from work
2Myth bustProcess tip
3Client story (anonymized)Soft CTA question
4Month recap / lessonPillar B light post

Theme quality bar

Themes should be specific enough to title:
  • Weak theme: "marketing tips"
  • Strong theme: "fixing hero sections that only talk about features"

Avoid theme whiplash

Do not switch themes because one post underperformed. Give a theme at least three posts before judging.

Tie themes to ecosystem

Each theme should optionally point to:
  • Blog post or doc on your site
  • Lead magnet
  • Product feature
One link depth per month is enough.

Planning checklist

  • Pillars defined (Messaging Pillars)
  • This month's focus pillar chosen
  • Buyer question written in one sentence
  • Six angles brainstormed (use four)
  • Entered in Content Calendar
Pair with Batching and Scheduling.
