What Actually Matters

Outcomes worth tracking: trust, discovery, and conversations — not performative busyness.

Why Social Feels Awful
Minimum Viable Presence

What Actually Matters

Social media is a means. If you cannot name the end, you will optimize for metrics that feel urgent and matter little.

Three outcomes that justify the effort

1. Discovery

The right people learn you exist. This is not "everyone" — it is buyers, partners, or hires in your niche finding you when they search or scroll. Signals: profile visits from target industries, inbound DMs that reference specific posts, search appearances for your name + topic.

2. Trust

Strangers become willing to take a small risk: click your link, join your list, reply to your DM, refer you. Signals: saves and shares (people endorsing you to their network), repeat engagers, "I have been following you for a while" in sales calls.

3. Conversation

Public or private exchanges that move toward a relationship — not comment-section performance. Signals: qualified DMs, email signups with UTM from social, meeting bookings from bio link.

What usually does not matter (yet)

Metric
Why it traps you
Raw follower countBuyable; says little about buyers
Viral impressionsSpikes without conversion fade fast
Posting streaksActivity without strategy
Trend participationOften wrong audience
Like count aloneCheap interaction
Exceptions exist — brand campaigns, ad-supported creators — but if you are reading this guide, you likely sell services or products, not ads.

The one-question filter

Before a post, ask:
Will this help someone who could pay me (or refer me) understand what I do and trust me enough to take the next step?
If no, skip or rewrite. If yes, ship — even if the format is boring.

Minimum proof of progress (90 days)

Track monthly:
  • Inbound conversations that started on social
  • Bio link clicks (with UTM)
  • One qualitative note: "best post this month and why"
That is enough to learn without living in analytics.

Tie social to business goals

Business goal
Social job
Fill pipelineProof + clear CTA to book
Launch productTease outcomes; link to waitlist
HireCulture + problem space posts
Local foot trafficHours, events, neighborhood proof
Pick one primary goal for the next quarter. Everything else is optional. Next: Minimum Viable Presence — the smallest setup that supports these outcomes.
